How much should I tip?
In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is the standard range for sit-down restaurant service, with 18–20% typical for good service. For delivery, bars, or casual counter service, 10–15% or a flat few dollars is common. Norms vary a lot outside the US, so it's worth checking local expectations when traveling.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically more correct since sales tax isn't part of the service being tipped, but in practice most people just tip a percentage of the total on the receipt — the difference is usually small.
How do you split a bill evenly?

What's a good tip for bad service?

Do I tip more if there's a large group?
Some restaurants automatically add an 18-20% “auto-gratuity” for large parties (often 6-8+ people) — check your receipt before adding another tip on top, since it may already be included.
How do I calculate a tip quickly in my head?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place to the left, then double it for 20% or add half of it for 15%. For a $64 bill, 10% is $6.40, 20% is $12.80, and 15% is $9.60.
What if the bill does not split evenly?
Round each share up to a convenient amount, or have one person cover the remainder. For example, $103.68 split three ways is $34.56 each.
Should I tip if a service charge is already included?
Often not, or only a small extra amount. A service charge is intended to cover the staff, but policies vary, so check the bill or ask. Gratuity added automatically is common for large groups.

Worked example
For a $60.00 bill with an 18% tip, the tip is $10.80 and the total is $70.80. If four friends split it evenly, each pays $17.70. The calculator multiplies the bill by the tip percentage, adds the result to the bill, and divides the total by the number of people, rounding to the cent only at the end.

The share can be a fraction of a cent, so when a total does not divide evenly (as with 103.68 among three), round each share up and let the extra go to the tip, or agree who covers the odd cent.
Tip before or after tax?
Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, while others tip on the total. With an $80.00 meal and 8.25% tax, the tax is $6.60. An 18% tip on the pre-tax amount is $14.40, and on the post-tax amount it is $15.59, a difference of $1.19. Enter whichever amount you prefer into the bill field.
Tipping customs vary
- United States and Canada: 15% to 20% is typical at sit-down restaurants, and service is often not included.
- Ireland and the UK: around 10% to 12.5% is common in restaurants, and some add a service charge, so check the bill first.
- Elsewhere: in some countries tipping is uncommon, or service is included in the price. Check local custom when travelling.
- Other services: taxi drivers, hairdressers and delivery drivers each have their own conventions.
