How much should I tip?
In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is the standard range for sit-down restaurant service, with 18–20% typical for good service. For delivery, bars, or casual counter service, 10–15% or a flat few dollars is common. Norms vary a lot outside the US, so it's worth checking local expectations when traveling.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically more correct since sales tax isn't part of the service being tipped, but in practice most people just tip a percentage of the total on the receipt — the difference is usually small.
How do you split a bill evenly?
