Frequently asked questions

How is Irish take-home pay calculated?

Start with your gross salary. Income tax is charged at 20% up to your standard rate cut-off point and 40% above it, then your tax credits are subtracted from the tax. USC and employee PRSI are charged on your gross pay on top of that. What is left is your net pay.

What are the 2027 and 2026 income tax bands and credits?

From 1 January 2027 (Budget 2027), a single person pays 20% on the first €46,500 and 40% on the rest, up from €44,000 in 2026. The personal, employee (PAYE) and earned income credits each rise by €125 to €2,125. The Budget says married couples and civil partners get proportionate increases, so this calculator assumes the same €2,500 rise for a one-income couple, from €53,000 to €55,500, with a personal credit of €4,250 plus the €2,125 employee credit. In 2026 the single band is €44,000, the one-income married band is €53,000, the personal credit is €2,000 (€4,000 for a couple) and the employee credit is €2,000.

What is USC and how much is it?

The Universal Social Charge is charged on gross income at 0.5% on the first €12,012, 2% from there to €30,300 from 1 January 2027 (€28,700 in 2026), 3% from there to €70,044 and 8% above that. It is not charged if your total income is €13,000 or less. USC is not reduced by pension contributions.

What is PRSI?

Pay Related Social Insurance funds social welfare benefits and the State Pension. Employee PRSI (Class A) is 4.2% of earnings and rises to 4.35% from 1 October 2026. This calculator uses a blended 4.24% for 2026 and 4.35% for 2027, and does not include any later PRSI rise. No PRSI is due if you earn €352 a week or less.

Do pension contributions reduce my tax?

Yes. Contributions to an approved pension are deducted before income tax, so they save tax at your top rate, within age-related limits. They do not reduce USC or PRSI, which is why the calculator only reduces the income-tax figure.

Is this exact?

No, it is an estimate for a PAYE employee with one job. It leaves out other tax credits (for example rent, medical or home-carer credits), the PRSI sliding scale credit, benefit in kind, and any second income in a married couple. For a precise figure, check your Revenue tax credit certificate or use Revenue's own PAYE calculator.

How much does a pension contribution reduce my take-home pay in Ireland?

Less than the contribution, because it is deducted before income tax. On a €60,000 salary a 5% contribution of €3,000 reduces take-home by €1,800, as €1,200 of tax at 40% is saved.

Is USC reduced by pension contributions?

No. USC and PRSI are charged on your gross pay, so only the income tax figure falls when you pay into an approved pension.

How much better off will I be in 2027?

It depends on your salary. On the figures in the table, a single person on €30,000 gains about €229 a year, and one on €60,000 gains about €698, from the changes in Budget 2027.

About this tool

This calculator estimates net pay for an Irish PAYE employee. It applies the 2027 (Budget 2027) or 2026 income tax bands, the personal and PAYE tax credits, USC and employee PRSI to your gross salary, with an optional pension contribution. Figures are rounded to the nearest euro and are meant for planning, not for filing. Rates last checked 6 October 2026 against the Budget 2027 statement on gov.ie and Citizens Information. The 2027 figures take effect from 1 January 2027.

Take-home pay at common salaries

The table shows a single PAYE employee with one job, the standard credits and no pension. The 2027 column reflects the Budget 2027 changes from 1 January 2027: a wider 20% band, higher credits and a higher USC middle band.

What a pension contribution costs you

On €60,000 a 5% contribution is €3,000, but take-home falls by only €1,800, because the contribution saves 40% income tax (€1,200) on the part above the standard rate band. USC and PRSI are still charged on the full gross salary.

Single versus married with one income

For a married couple or civil partners with one income, the calculator uses the wider band and larger credit. At €60,000 on 2027 rates, income tax falls from €10,450 to €6,525, so take-home rises from €45,623 to €49,548. USC and PRSI do not change, because they depend on the individual's pay rather than marital status.

Why your payslip may differ

Revenue gives you a tax credit certificate with your actual credits and cut-off point. Rent credit, medical expenses, a home carer credit, benefit in kind, the PRSI sliding-scale credit and a second income in a couple can all change the number. Treat this page as a planning tool and check your payslip or Revenue's own calculator for exact figures.
